Diyala Medicine holds a scientific symposium on sinusitis
The College of Medicine at University of Diyala held a scientific symposium on sinusitis, in which Dr. Ali Lafta Salman lectured in the continuing education hall.
The lecturer defined sinusitis as inflammation of the sinuses adjacent to the nose, leading to symptoms. Common symptoms and signs include thick nasal mucus, blocked nose, and facial pain. Other signs and symptoms may include fever, headache, weak sense of smell, sore throat, and cough. It is filled with air and surrounds the nose and eyes. It is connected to the nasal cavity through small openings that allow the release of mucus and secretions from the cavities into the nose, as well as ventilation of the cavities. Sinusitis can be due to infection, allergy, or autoimmune problems. Most cases of sinusitis are due to a viral infection and resolve within 10 days. Sinusitis is a common inflammatory condition, with more than 24 million cases annually in the United States.
The lecturer confirmed that the sudden blockage of the sinuses leads to congestion of mucous secretions inside the sinus cavity, turning them into infection or pus, and the pressure inside these sinuses increases, causing a severe headache.
