College of Medicine, University of Diyala, holds a scientific symposium on the risks of obesity and necessary solutions

Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Medicine, University of Diyala, Professor Dr. Ismail Ibrahim Latif, the Women’s Affairs Unit held a scientific symposium on the risks of obesity and necessary solutions. The symposium was presented by Lecturer Dr. Sumaya Hussein Jumaa from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The symposium included several key points, highlighting the importance of understanding the causes leading to obesity, such as lack of physical activity and consumption of unhealthy foods, which result in obesity. Emphasis was placed on some methods of treatment through exercise, maintaining a healthy diet, and early sleep.
The second point focused on understanding the risks of obesity, which include heart and blood vessel diseases and diabetes, contributing to an increased risk of cancer, such as endometrial cancer, breast cancer, and colon cancer, as well as leading to arthritis, particularly in the lower joints.
The final point of the symposium discussed treatment methods, including the use of certain prescription medications that can treat obesity and reduce weight, as well as surgical intervention. However, when the body mass index (BMI) is more than 40, with a weight reduction of 50%, it is often accompanied by serious side effects, including infections and vitamin deficiencies.
