Surgery Branch|

About the branch:

It is one of the first branches of the college of Medicine since its establishment. It started with three academic staff (assistant prof.) and now consists of seven, three of whom are Assistant professors, The other four are lecturers. Our branch has completed the requirements to grant the Master’s degree in surgery, eleven students had been graduated with a degree of master in general surgery.

Vision, Message And Objective:

Vision:

To obtain the trust, support and accreditation of the College, the University and the scientific institutions of the local and foreign affairs, and to improve the levels of surgical teaching and training.

Message:

Enhancing the clinical capabilities and skills of students in order to create a generation of qualified graduates who are able to complete their postgraduate studies according to modern concepts.

Improving the scientific level of students and informing them of the latest medical and surgical developments in order to improve the health level.

Enhancing the scientific and clinical skills and expertise of postgraduate students to enable them to manage the comprehensive medical care process.

Enhancing the research skills of students and faculty.

Objectives:

The main aim of the surgery branch is to provide the medical students the theoretical and clinical ability to prepare a medical doctor who has the knowledge and training ability to perform his work in surgical field in hospitals with full interaction in his work and the achievement of what is required of him to serve the patient and the society and the state according to the working conditions and possibilities and the ability to develop himself and his job to improve the performance required of him and aspiring.

Curriculum of the Branch:

Primary Study

Theoretical Curriculum

Basics of surgery (Third degree)                                   (30 hours)

Systemic surgery (fourth degree)                                  (90 hours)

Surgical subspecialties (Fifth degree)                          (75 hours)

  • Plastic surgery
  • Trauma surgery

Ophthalmology                                                             (30 hours)

Orthopedics                                                                   (30 hours)

ENT                                                                                 (30 hours)

Clinical Training

The clinical training of students is carried out at the teaching hospital at a rate of 60 hours per year (2 hours per week) for the fourth degree and 150 hours for the fifth degree in the surgical word and the outpatient department during which students are trained in various surgical cases related to surgery. This includes training on how to collect and write the patient’s surgical history, learn and practice the clinical examination of the various body organs, and discuss the cases and tests necessary for them to arrive at the correct surgical diagnosis and provide appropriate treatment and follow-up cases and documentation.

The sixth stage curriculum includes clinical training at the teaching hospital for 10 weeks (5 days a week – 6 hours per day). This includes discussing the most important theoretical and practical topics in surgery in relation to the comprehensive clinical history, clinical examination of the various body organs, tests and laboratory analyses in order to arrive at the correct diagnosis and give appropriate treatment and study and document surgical cases. The clinical training for the sixth stage includes surgical wards and theatre, emergency department, and outpatient. The clinical training also includes preparation and discussion of various surgical topics by students and teachers.

Master of surgery

 First academic year

1. The first year (30 weeks):

Physiology, basics of surgery, Medical statistics and research methods, microbiology, pharmacy, pathology, forensic medicine and anatomy (Total 11 units)

Theoretical: 4 hours per week.

Practical: Working as a senior resident doctor in the surgical ward, theatre, emergency room and the outpatient

2. The second year (30 weeks):

Neurosurgery, thyroid surgery, cardiovascular surgery, plastic surgery, Diagnostic radiology, orthopedic surgery, Urosurgery, GIT and biliaree tree surgery and writing the graduating thesis. (Total 25 units)

Theoretical: 4 hours per week

Practical: Working as a senior resident in the surgical ward, emergency room and the outpatient

Graduation Research (9 Units).
